Summer Essentials

There's a few things that I just don't like to be without come the summer holidays.  Aside from the obvious necessity for sun screen, (I'm in the throes of trying out a new to me one this year, so I can't comment too much on this subject just yet) there are a few other bits and pieces that I like to take with me on holiday.

The first on my list is a tube of Aloe Vera Gel.  This one I got when we holidaying in Tenerife, from a supermarket there, but it is widely available here and I have often bought it from Holland and Barrett.  I love this gel.  It feels so lovely and fresh on the skin, is so soothing (especially after a day in the sun) and I like to think that by applying it daily whilst on holiday, usually after showering in the evening, it helps to rehydrate the skin, soothe any soreness and help prevent blistering and peeling.  It is also great to have and use generally on any kind of burn or sore skin, so it's a good one for the medicine cabinet.

The second item on my list would be flip flops.  Summer just wouldn't be summer without getting my toes out.  When on holiday, I live in flip flops. (Save for evenings out of course, although if I could get away with them I would) I do occasionally use them at home, mostly just around the house, as a summer slipper, but on holiday I wear them all or most of the time.

I bought a current favourite pair in February before we went to the Canaries, namely these leopard print beauties from Primark, which at £1.50 were a steal. I love the animal print and the floral embellishment.  They are wonderfully comfortable too.

My latest acquisition has been some grey ones from Gandy's that I bought last month.  They're not fancy, but I really like these too and have been wearing them regularly around the house since I bought them a few weeks ago.  They are also very comfortable.  There's nothing worse than flip flops that hurt your toes.  Once I find pairs that I enjoy wearing, I'm quite loyal to them and don't want to part with them.

Probably one of the best things about flip flops,  is that they are so easy to pack and don't take up much room in a suitcase.  It will be a difficult decision choosing between these come the time to pack for this year's summer holiday.  I may just have to take them both.

My next summer essential is this spotted cotton covered visor that I love wearing on the beach.  I'm a big fan of visors, I used to really like them as a child in the 70's and I've used  this one for a few years now. I may look a bit of a throwback on the beach, but I don't really care.  I love the fact that it protects your face from the sun, but makes your head feel much less hot and sweaty than wearing a hat.

Finally, my last summer essential is a pair of prescription sunglasses, which I treated myself to earlier in the year.  As I wear glasses most of the time these days, having a pair of prescription sunnies in the summer makes life so much easier, especially when driving or sight seeing.

What are your summer essentials?

    1. You're right of course and I probably have worn them in an evening on occasion if they go with my outfit of course.

  3. I would love to wear flip flops but every pair - chesp or expensive have rubbed my toes. I think I have worn my new Teva sandals every day since they arrived, no need for tons of summer shoes.

I am after a visor, not for the sun, but for when we go to galleries, I have lots of trouble looking at the works with the white walls and the way things are lit, so I think a visor would really help.

    1. I saw a really nice one in TK Maxx over the weekend, but it was made of woven straw, as opposed to fabric. I would definitely consider buying a new one if I could find one in a slightly more subtle colour (it was bright orange).
