US Favourites

Apologies for not posting for a few days, but I've had a few technical problems trying to upload my holiday snaps.  Anyway, eventually I succeeded, so here's a post about some favourite foods I enjoyed whilst in the US.

There's a few things that I really enjoyed eating whilst we were holidaying in the US.  The first was a meal that I attempted to make for the first time ever.  I'd been meaning to make Tacos back home in England, but never got around to it, so when I saw the mixes and shells in the supermarket in Florida, I thought why not.  They are so easy to make, as they take 10 minutes or less.

You just put the Taco shells in the oven for a few minutes to warm through, cook some mince, mix in the seasoning mix, spoon it into the shells and then add lettuce, chopped tomato/avocado/peppers, grated cheese to the top and serve.  I used the crunchy taco shells and the mild taco mix, but if I make them again at home, which I definitely intend to do as they were really tasty, I will use the soft shells as the crunchy ones were definitely a little tricky to eat. They were a winner all around though and will be appearing on my menu plans from now on. In my enthusiasm to eat them, I'm afraid I totally forgot to take a photograph, but you can get the drift from the box above.

Another favourite whilst we were in the states were definitely these Milk Duds, which are a kind of chocolate coated caramel.  They reminded me a little of the chewing nuts you can get here, but without the nuttiness. I loved these and at just a dollar a box I bought them on a couple of occasions. I fully intended to bring a couple of boxes home with me, but didn't get the chance to purchase any as they were out of stock in the 7/11.  I'm obviously not the only person who likes them!  I think I can get them here, but they are a lot more expensive.  They may go on my Christmas/birthday list.

Finally, I was tickled by this sticker on some huge avocados I bought in the US.

I'm not sure how they manage to grow a lower fat and lower calorie avocado, but I'd be interested to know. (?GM)

Something that I enjoyed trying and found really tasty whilst we were in Florida were raw peanuts in shells. No photo I'm afraid, but they are slightly larger, sweeter and juicier than the peanuts in shells you get here and are not roasted. I tried and then bought some from a farmers market stall by the side of the road on the Florida keys and it was so interesting to see and try them in their raw form.  I'll definitely look out for them again on my travels.

My final favourite was the regional delicacy the Key Lime Pie, which is a kind of citrus cheesecake. It has a lovely subtle lime flavour and is really tasty.  I forgot to photograph the couple that I had whilst we were away, but I have to admit that the one I ate on our last night in Key West at Johnny Rocket's burger restaurant, was definitely my favourite.
